I’m nursing a glass of tap water

I’m nursing a glass of tap water

while you two lean over the marble island.

A laugh breaks out between you—

short, sharp, and meant for no one else.

I watch the condensation slide down the wood,

forming a ring that looks like a halo

until you wipe it away with a napkin.

I’m not being difficult.

I’m just watching the wood rot.
