Open Enrollment

The router is a dead brick of plastic.

The baseboards are scrubbed raw.

I have nothing left to do

but look at the paper.

I bought this to be the version of me

who has lunch dates and deadlines.

Instead, the boxes are white deserts.

Empty squares for twenty-one days.

The metal spiral catches the sun

and throws a jagged light across the desk.

It’s a very clean way

to admit I have nowhere to be.
