Mechanical Failure

The elevator light stayed stuck on ten

while I checked the time again and again.

You think I’m just lazy, I know the routine,

but I’m at the mercy of a rusted machine.

The clock in the hall has a jagged little beat,

like a heart that’s too tired to stay on its feet.

It’s easy for you to be exactly on time

when you aren't the one stuck in the grime.
