Understudy

They’re debating the merits of the Stihl versus Toro,

serious men with sensible shoes.

I’m sitting on a folding chair in the back,

holding a Styrofoam cup of tea

that’s already gone lukewarm.

A single sugar crystal sits at the bottom,

refusing to melt into the dregs.

I realize I’m the only one here

who doesn't have a mortgage or a lawn,

just a leaking faucet and a screensaver

of a place I will never actually see.
