Settling

The neighbor's porch is almost done,

they’ve been sanding the cedar all day.

The dust has blocked out the pale winter sun

and found its own invisible way.

I reached for the cumin to season the rice

and left a yellow print on the jar.

The grit in the air is the neighborhood price,

coating the pantry and the roof of the car.
