Weather Vane

I tried to carry the thirty-pound bag

of cat litter up the porch steps

while balancing my keys in my teeth.

Something inside my leg gave up.

A dry, loud pop

like a stick breaking in the woods.

Now the joint feels hot and thick

under the fabric of these work pants,

a little weather vane

telling me it’s going to rain for a week.
