Low Battery

The radiator finally went quiet,

giving me the first ten minutes of peace

since I got home from the shift.

Then that sharp, plastic chirp

cut through the hallway.

I’m standing on the dining chair

that has one leg shorter than the rest.

Reaching for the ceiling in my underwear

just to make the mechanical bird

stop screaming at the dark.
