Saturated Fur

Rain just stopped, a quick thing,

and then the shudder,

the big, deep shake

from the neighbor's dog,

right by my open window.

It hit me, that scent,

a cloud of it, thick and rich,

of earth and clean dog,

but wilder, somehow.

It pulled me back to a yard,

a different time, a different hound,

and the sudden, heavy weight

of remembering, right there,

in the damp, summer air.
