Interim

I didn't want to talk to him,

so I bought a ticket for a screen

showing a documentary about bees.

The house lights died

with a heavy, mechanical thud.

Total dark.

The kind that makes your ears ring.

I moved my foot

and the sole of my sneaker

stuck to the floor

with a sound like a bandage

being pulled off a scab.

Just me and six other people,

waiting for the first flicker

to tell us what to look at.
