The Whistle in the Speech

The office party photo came in the email,

me mid-sentence, mouth wide.

There it is. The dark vertical line

between the two front teeth.

I spent the whole morning

talking to the new hire

with my lips barely moving,

mumbling like I had a secret.

My tongue keeps checking the edge,

measuring the gap,

waiting for it to widen

until I’m nothing but air.
