Elasticity

I spent ten minutes with a thumbnail

scraping the gray, hardened knot from the desk.

It’s been there since the year the mail

started bringing bills that felt like a test.

I used to fold the silver wrappers into squares,

tiny mirrors to keep my hands from shaking.

It’s a nervous habit nobody really shares,

keeping the jaw busy while the heart is breaking.
