I watched you put the car keys on the counter

I watched you put the car keys on the counter

and walk into the bedroom without a word.

The silence is the prize I was yelling for,

a hollow, ringing thing that fills the corners.

The refrigerator is humming a steady low note

to let me know the kitchen is finally mine.

I’m standing in the center of the tile,

right where I said I wouldn't move an inch,

realizing how cold it is to be right.
