Pigment

I reached behind the dryer

and pulled out a single sock.

Dark red. Maroon.

It’s been there since the year

we rented that place on the coast.

I spilled the grape juice today

on the oak floor.

It soaked into the grain,

leaving a bruise that looks exactly

like the wine we couldn't clean up

before we left.
