Between Floors

The dentist said my gums are receding.

I am thirty-two.

I still slump against the stainless steel

when the doors slide shut.


Stalled between four and five,

the elevator just hummed.

I looked at the person in the metal

and stuck my tongue out.


My eyes looked like they hadn't

slept since the nineties.
