The screen glows,

a blue halo in the dim kitchen.

'How long soft boiled egg'

I type, thumb fumbling,

and there it is, the familiar result.

Six and a half minutes.

Just like last month,

and the month before that,

and the one before that.

My brain, a sieve

for the small, domestic facts.

It remembers the wrong things.

The curve of your jaw

in fading light,

the way the old dog used to sigh

before lying down.

But not this.

Never this.

And I tap the timer,

a quiet, small defeat.
