I reached for the spare key in the dark

I reached for the spare key in the dark

and felt a row of cold, iron teeth.

She had it wrapped in a floral silk scarf,

hidden in a drawer, buried underneath.

A rusted circular blade, heavy and wide,

kept safe like a pearl or a wedding ring.

I don’t know what she was trying to divide

or why she held onto such a jagged thing.
