I Don't Know What to Do With This

She said of course and I had to turn away

from the phone like I'd been caught at something.

I had rehearsed the no.

I had already arranged my face for it.

She arrived yesterday with a bag and a bottle of wine

and I didn't know where to put her,

so I said the couch is fine and she said great

and now she's asleep in the next room

and I have been standing in this kitchen

for twenty minutes.

Two mugs on the counter.

Mine, and the one with the chip on the rim

I never use and can't explain keeping.

I filled them both.

I've built a pretty good case

for not needing anything.

Years of it. Airtight.

And then she said of course

The coffee's gone cold.

I don't know what to do with a yes.
