The silence in a smile

I stared too long at the mirror,

the chipped tile edge,

a crack running behind my eyes.

That space—

between front teeth—

a quiet gap

where words stumble,

where laughter leaks and sometimes stops.

It holds the small silences I swallow,

the moments I bite back,

not quite whole,

a pause that nobody names.
