11:47 and Someone Asking

It came in at 11:47

which I know because I looked,

and I was in the middle of deciding

I was too much trouble

for everyone,

which I do sometimes,

which takes a specific kind of focus.

Did you eat?

I put the phone face-down.

Lay there looking at the ceiling,

the water stain above the closet

shaped like a country I couldn't name.

Three minutes. Maybe four.

Then the screen lit up again:

I can bring something.

Not: I love you.

Not: you matter to me, please.

Just —

I can bring something.

Like it was already a given

that I was worth the drive.

I didn't answer for a while.

I was still deciding

whether to believe it.
