Sugar Coat

The air is sharp and tastes of cold and rust.

The music is a ghost three blocks away.

It turns the neighborhood to sugar-dust,

a tinny tune that doesn't want to stay.

The white truck idles by the yellow light.

The exhaust is thick and heavy like a lung.

It breathes a cloud of gray into the night,

a bitter coldness coating on the tongue.
