Interest

I’m just watching the steam.

The kitchen is too quiet for 6 AM.

When I reach for the handle,

my middle knuckle catches—

a sharp, dry hitch

that stops the movement cold.

I saw him do that.

I saw him shake his hand out

like he was trying to throw the pain away.

The mirror shows a jawline

that isn’t mine.

It’s just a debt I’m paying

in bone and skin.
