The Shortest Word

The cursor blinks against the white,

a steady pulse in the middle of the night.

I wrote about the ceiling and the floor,

and how I can’t take the noise anymore.

I told him why the sleep won’t come,

how my brain feels heavy and my hands feel numb.

But then I hit the button to erase the line,

and sent back the lie that I’m doing fine.
