The text came through while I was burning toast

The text came through while I was burning toast,

a story about a summer by the lake.

He’s talking to a girl who is a ghost,

a version of me I didn't mean to break.

She wore a shirt with stripes of blue and green

and didn't mind the way the water smelled.

She was the happiest he’d ever seen,

before the world was shaken and upheld.

I look at my reflection in the sink,

and try to find the girl who liked the cold.

I’m older now than I would like to think,

and that girl is a story that’s been told.

She lives in silver frames in other rooms,

while in this house, a different person blooms.
