Zero Visibility

The brake lights of the Buick up ahead

just simmered out like embers in a sink.

I’m hovering on the shoulder, seeing red,

or maybe just the ghost of what I think.

My high beams hit the wall and bounce right back,

a solid door of gray against the glass.

The world has shrunk to ten feet of the track,

and nothing human has the nerve to pass.

I’m sitting in the middle of a blur,

the engine ticking like a cooling heart.

I used to know exactly where we were

before the atmosphere fell all apart.
