I found the crumpled page today,
a relic from a hopeful way.
My girlish script, so neat and clear,
listing all I wished for near.
‘A mind that’s sharp,’ ‘a witty tongue,’
‘a certain song that must be sung.’
‘Kind eyes,’ ‘a laugh both deep and true,’
‘a love to see the long years through.’
And yes, he had them, every one,
my perfect, shining, chosen sun.
He checked each box, he fit the bill,
and with his charm, he worked his will.
He learned my fears, he knew my style,
and used it all, just for a while.
He built me up, then took me down,
the king of my small, foolish town.
So be careful what you ask, my dear,
those answered prayers can bring you fear.
For what you want, you might just get,
and then be left with deep regret.
