It’s tangled in the back of the drawer

It’s tangled in the back of the drawer

with a dead battery and some twine.

A thin, beaded chain

snagged on a half-melted rubber band.

I pull it out into the light.

The metal is thin as a coin

with the edges notched and notched

like a key that doesn't fit a door.

My thumb catches on the letters,

stamped deep into the steel.

It smells like the bottom of a toolbox.

I don't know who stayed behind

to leave this in the junk.
