No One's Home

The stack of mail has sat for days

beside the keys and grocery list.

I walk across the driveway’s maze

to do the chore I should have missed.

I press the plastic, yellowed white,

and hear the chime inside the hall.

Their TV throws a flickering light,

but no one answers to the call.

A spiderweb across the frame

shivers with the ringing sound.

They’re home and hiding just the same,

while I stand frozen on their ground.
