Stone Jaw

Rain ran streaks down the windowpane,

just quiet outside.

I was watching it, thinking

of nothing much,

then felt the muscle in my cheek,

knotted, a stone

under my thumb.

Didn't even know I was doing it.

It had been there, probably for hours,

or days.

A hard ridge,

like rock pulled from wet ground.

My own body,

saying something

I hadn't heard.
