Black Pavement

The street crew worked.

The air grew thick.

A black, hot smell,

viscous and slick.

The tar bubbled,

a dark, slow ooze.

Across the asphalt,

what heat can choose.

It coats the shoes.

It coats the air.

A heavy presence.

Beyond repair.
