The Ledger

The phone call stopped me cold.

Your brother's voice, worn and old.

He spoke of money owed,

a debt I thought long bestowed

on history, a faded score.

But it's your name they're asking for.

This ledger you forgot to close,

the seed of bitterness you sowed.

Now someone else must pay the price,

my own cold silence, sacrifice.
