Between Us

I just sat down after dinner, the room heavy,

with silence that follows shared laughter.

Two bodies on the couch, yet the air is thick,

like the space between thoughts that won’t cross the gap.

We finished a movie, words left unspoken,

a dropped spoon echoes in an empty kitchen,

the cushions sigh, trying to bridge our distance,

while knees almost touch, but remain apart.

You glance at your phone, I stare at the wall,

the flickering light catches dust in the air,

every heartbeat a reminder,

of everything we don’t dare to say.
