Settling

The radiator clicks and starts to moan,

A metal throat that’s clearing itself of grit.

I’m sitting on the sofa all alone,

Trying to find the place I used to fit.

The hallway door is closed and heavy now,

The shouting left a ringing in the hall.

I don’t remember when or even how

We built this thick and invisible wall.

On the table sits a half-full glass of juice,

A ring of water sinking in the wood.

The tension is a knot I can’t shake loose,

Even if I knew it did no good.
