The mercury plummeted down to the floor

The mercury plummeted down to the floor.

The envelope slid like a blade through the door.

A four and two zeros, a debt to the heat,

While the frost grows a garden of white on the street.

I look through the grate where the blue cone is bright,

Feeding the hunger of a long, hollow night.
