Occupancy

The house is a different animal

when the cars are gone from the drive.

I didn't know the stairs could groan

without a foot on them.

At two, the ice maker drops a fist

into the plastic tray, a sudden

shattering in the kitchen.

The oven clock throws a blue,

digital fever across the floor.

I am the only thing breathing in the dark.
