It was a heavy weight in the junk drawer

It was a heavy weight in the junk drawer,

under the menus and the rubber bands.

When I twisted the cap,

it didn't click. It ground

like teeth on sand.

The copper spring is buried

under a bloom of chalky, sea-foam salt.

A slow, chemical rot

eating the metal from the inside out.

This is what happens when you keep

your light in the dark too long.
