Vacuum Sealed

It’s been in three different kitchens now.

The steel is cold, a hollow, heavy bell

with a dent in the side from the night

I let it hit the pavement.

I unscrew the cap and the smell of dead lakes

comes rising out—two years of stale rain

trapped in a vacuum.

It’s still holding on to what should have dried up.
