Unknown Origin

I noticed it while brushing teeth,

a shadow rising from beneath.

A smudge the color of a plum

upon my arm, beneath the thumb.

I pressed the center with my nail

and felt the steady, quiet fail

of some small vessel deep inside

where all my clumsy secrets hide.

I can't remember where I hit

or what I did to earn all it,

but now it’s here, a purple mark

that spoke of something in the dark.
