Sudden Thaw

Stepped out. The sun

like a slap,

too much, too soon.

Eighty degrees, feels wrong.

My thick coat, a burden,

traps the heat against my skin.

The street,

it smells of wet dirt

and something else,

something dead, thawing.

A plastic bag

stuck in a puddle,

glinting like a broken tooth

in the sudden glare.

Winter wasn't

a good friend, but

at least it was honest.

This fake summer,

it just feels

like a trick.

Like it wants something

I don't have.
