I'm chewing through a dry ham roll

I'm chewing through a dry ham roll,

staring at the bus schedule

like it's a map to somewhere better.

The bird lands on the curb,

lumping along on a stump

where the fourth toe should be.

It looks for crumbs in the oily water,

its neck shifting through

gasoline greens and bruised purples.

It doesn't care that I'm watching.

It just wants the crust.
