I wore the red dress to buy eggs

I wore the red dress to buy eggs.

It’s the one with the silk lining

that makes a sound like a heavy breath

when I walk down the cereal aisle.

I reached for the pickles and let them slip.

The jar hit the floor and the glass

shattered into a thousand wet teeth.

The clerk didn't even look up.

He just pushed a broom over the brine

as it soaked into my hem,

turning the bright fabric dark.
