Baseline Hum

Silence comes in its own noise,

I swear. Woke up, heart kicking

a frantic beat against my ribs,

and all there was

was the low, steady thrum

of the refrigerator.

Just a pulse, an empty apartment's

mechanical breath, but tonight it felt

like a judgment.

Like it was saying,

'Still here, still here, still

just here.'
