Flicker

In the dark, the flicker feels alive,

a flashlight's sputter, a hope to survive.

Battery whispers echo in the room,

while shadows creep close, weaving their gloom.

I held it up, like a promise I’d made,

a dying light, but it never betrayed.

The beam stretched thin across the wall,

just enough light to reveal it all.

The night, it wraps tighter, a thief in disguise,

I watch my fears dance, catching my eyes.

What if this light dims completely, and then

I’m left alone with the silence again?
