Missed Signals

I stood by the window, wild hair like a storm,

a smudge of my self, barely fitting the form.

I laughed when I shouldn’t, hoping for eyes

to land on the heart I’d painted in lies.

A friend told a story, my face turned to flame,

‘Remember that time?’ laughter swallowed my name.

I wished for the ground to just swallow me whole,

the cracks in the glass couldn’t hide how I’d fold.
