Night Driving

The highway stretches,

a black ribbon,

stretched taut against stars,

each mile a promise unkept,

as headlights cut through darkness,

blurring figures flicker by,

a moment of panic,

when a silhouette by the roadside

makes my heart race,

a fleeting thought of connection,

so quick it slips away,

like shadows playing tricks on my mind.

I drive,

a lone traveler in search,

silence filled with echoes,

where thoughts flash bright,

then dim,

a stretch of road that beckons,

each curve a whisper,

a promise of something more,

yet all I find is the open air

and the endless hum of tires

as I chase the night.
