Impact Study

I didn't like the way it caught the light,

a green glass bottle sitting on the shelf.

It felt too whole, too finished and too right,

so I decided to break it for myself.

I swept the floor twice, or maybe three times,

but today the broom missed a sliver in the dark.

I found it under the radiator’s rusted rimes,

a jagged green tooth, a sharp little spark.

I held the pieces in the palm of my hand,

trying to bridge the gaps with a bit of spit.

But the glass is a map of a different land

and none of the borders are ever going to fit.
