Digital Silence

I held the phone to my ear too long

after the click of the line going dead.

I was waiting for that low, mechanical song,

the steady hum that once filled the head.

Instead, there was nothing but hollow air,

a vacuum where the signal used to be.

I stared at the smudge on the screen right there,

a print of the cheekbone left by me.

We don't get the warning of the steady drone

to tell us the connection has truly ended.

We just drift in a quiet, rechargeable zone

with a silence that can’t be mended.
