They don't share the heat anymore.

I saw the bed when the door was open—

two separate quilts, blue and brown,

folded back with a space between.


A narrow strip of white sheet

shows the distance of the mattress,

a cold canyon where the cotton

is smooth and unbothered.


It is a quiet way to break.

No glass on the floor, no shouting,

just a six-inch border of air

that neither one wants to cross.
