Larceny

It was a bowl of blue glass beads

next to a stack of clipboards.

The woman was typing, her glasses

sliding down her nose.

I didn't need it.

I just wanted to own a piece

of the quiet that wasn't mine.

Now it’s in my pocket, clicking

against a plastic button,

a small, smooth weight

that says I am still a thief.
