The Slid Gap

The light in here is a flickering tube.

I counted the change on the folding table

but my thumb went numb in the heat.

It hit the tile with a dull sound

and slid where I couldn't follow.

It’s wedged in the grease and the lint

under the belly of number fourteen.

A 1998 face staring up through the black oil.

The heavy cycle needs one more

but the machine is too heavy to move.
