Foreign Body

The skin has bridged the gap now.

It’s a smooth, hard hill

over the dark line of the cedar.

I feel it against the steering wheel

when I take the turn too sharp,

a sharp, internal signal

that the wood is still there,

drinking from my pulse.

I stopped looking for the tweezers.

It’s easier to let the body

build a wall around the intrusion.
